This year’s National Program for Playground Safety John Preston Award, given for groups that have done an outstanding job of increasing playground safety, goes to the Indiana Bureau of Child Care, Child Care Center Licensing Consultants. The state was awarded funding through the American Recovery Act of 2009. Approximately $910,000 was earmarked for playgrounds. All of the Childcare Center Licensing Consultants are certified through the National Program for Playground Safety or are CPSIs. One of the qualifications for the grant application was to have a playground audit conducted and all hazards corrected. The center consultants (there are 9) conducted 711 playground audits from March 2010 through May 2010. That consisted of 179 child care centers, 16 ministries, and 515 child care homes. Grants were awarded to 290 providers in amounts not to succeed $5,000.00. Since August, 2010, the consultants have been conducting final inspections on the 190 grant recipients. This was done while still maintaining their own regular licensing case loads. It would be interesting to see how much this has reduced the injuries in the state of Indiana. Congratulations to the Indiana Bureau of Child Care, Child Care Center Licensing Consultants for their great work. It would be interesting to know how many children they have influenced to be safer in Indiana on playgrounds and in play areas.
