The National Program for Playground Safety has created the John Preston Safe Playground Award this year. This annual award is in honor of John Preston, a tireless worker for the safety of children, and will be given annually to an organization or agency who exemplifies the care and concern for children by creating safe play environments!
The first annual John Preston Playground Safety Award was given to Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. The Indiana Family and Social Services has spent a considerable amount of time conducting playground safety workshops for child care directors and has assessed the state for playground safety. The agency has helped obtain over $900,000 from the Federal Child Care Development Fund to help over 200 child care centers over the past four years get compliant with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines. In addition, the agency will be getting all child care consultants and managers certified this summer in playground safety.
It should also be noted that the overall Indiana grade rose from a C+ to a B- and that the fall surfacing grade for the childcare section changed from a D+ to a C. In times of state budget problems, this state agency has made child safety a priority. NPPS is extremely proud to honor the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration with the John Preston Playground Safety Award!
